The Whale: A Spoiler Free Review

This captivating film delves deep into the struggles of its characters, revealing the personal pain and inner turmoil that we all face in our lives. While it may revolve around a morbidly obese man, Charlie, it's not just about his physical condition. Instead, it brilliantly portrays the universality of pain and the ugliness that exists within us all.
Through the stories of Charlie, Ellie, Mary, Liz, and Thomas, we see different types of disappointment and anguish that we have all experienced at some point. This makes their journeys all the more relatable, as we empathize with their struggles and the choices they make in response.
One of the film's most resonant themes is the need for honesty and communication. Charlie's last plea to his students "Fuck assignments! Fuck essays!" Just write me one honest thing!" is a powerful reminder of how often we hide our true feelings from ourselves and others, leading to more pain and suffering. It's a call to action to break down the walls we've built up around ourselves and to connect with each other on a deeper level.
Personally, I was deeply moved by the film's message. It made me reflect on the state of the world and how we seem to have lost sight of the importance of compassion and empathy. I appreciated the honesty and vulnerability of the characters, and their struggles left a lasting impression on me.
In honor of Charlie's request of his students, I too, would like to write for you one honest thing:
"I am deeply troubled by the world we are currently living in. Nobody seems to care about one another, and verbal assassination has become a sport on social media. Why? It disgusts me that we have lost touch so much that we mindlessly hurt one another for no reason. Every day of my life I wonder what it would have been like had I made better choices, or been given better opportunities. I mourn for what could have been. I wish I had had parents that nurtured me, rather than cast me off. Some days I am so afraid of what the world will be like for the younger ones after I am gone. I'm totally unsatisfied with my lot in life at times, and it pisses me off. I just want to do one good thing and know it made a difference." - Alice
Brendan Fraser's performance as Charlie is outstanding, delivering a nuanced and heart-wrenching portrayal of a man who has experienced so much pain in his life. Overall, I give "The Whale" a perfect 10/10 recommendation. It's a timely and necessary film that everyone should see, reminding us of the power of honesty and the need for human connection.
